Magnetic particles for medical applications have been developed by many researchers. Since magnetic particles have unique magnetic features not present in other materials, they can be applied to special medical techniques. Separation, immunoassay, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), drug delivery, and hyperthermia are enhanced by the use of magnetic particles. Perhaps the most easily achieved magnetic manipulations of therapeutic value are ex vivo apheresis procedures where high strength, high gradient fields are readily applied to magnetic particles in biological fluids. In typical applications, magnetic particles are added to extracorporeal blood where they can bind to materials such as DNA, viruses Citation, Citation, stem cells Citation, or cancer cells Citation, Citation and then be removed from the blood using a magnetic field prior to reintroduction to the blood stream. Particles for these applications can be large to aid in magnetic purification and they need not evade the RES because they are removed from the blood prior to its return to the body. A more technically challenging application is to direct particles to tissues in vivo using high-gradient magnetic fields. As with size and biomolecular targeting, the objective of magnetic targeting is to better localize material to a lesion and avoid exposure of healthy tissues. With respect to cancer, while surgical resection is a first choice when tumor location is known, resection is not always possible or can be only incompletely accomplished, and magnetic targeting of drug-loaded particles to known tumor locations is potentially useful.
